This is true, there are many alternatives. However, this was a presentation on Linux and Ubuntu, and the part you&#039;re taking in context (Alternatives to Unix?) was during my part on the history of Unix and Linux -- there may be lots of options now, but there wasn&#039;t in 1992.</description>

FreeBSD is based on BSD, which in turn is based on AT&amp;T UNIX.

Then there are the NetBSD, OpenBSD &amp; DragonFly forks of FreeBSD.
