FreeBSD is based on BSD, which in turn is based on AT&T UNIX. Then there are the NetBSD, OpenBSD & DragonFly forks of FreeBSD. And then there's <a href="http://wiki.debian.org/Debian_GNU/kFreeBSD" rel="nofollow">Debian GNU/Kbsd</a> Oh and now we have <a href="http://www.opensolaris.org/os/" rel="nofollow">OpenSolaris</a> with several derivatives of it including GNU/OpenSolaris. <a href="http://www.gnusolaris.org/gswiki" rel="nofollow">Nexenta</a> is OpenSolaris + Ubuntu. :) Lots of alternatives out there...
